Online Dating Toolkit?

By Stephanie Constantina

You know those "here is what you need to make the item" instructional leaflets? Well, the other day I began wondering what a toolkit for online dating might be like. I was surprised by what I found...

For my online dating toolkit I began with the physical things you will need, then went on to the emotional or mental requirements. When I looked at the physical things all that I found that the average person needs for dating online is:

- a computer

- an Internet connection and email

- a means of payments, such as a credit card

These are all things that nearly every Internet user already possesses. But why a means of payment, when there are completely free dating sites out there? Well, as you will no doubt read elsewhere other than in this article, there is really no such thing as free. All businesses have costs and must make a profit if they are to remain online. So sites that appear to be completely free will either entice you to buy things through their advertising or be persistent in trying to sell you their products. There are other issues with completely free sites too, such as less vetting of members than with paid subscription sites. So, for a bit safer, somewhat better quality Internet dating, a paid subscription site is recommended.

Turning to the mental requirements, here is the list I came up with:

- some patience

- some perseverance

- a sense of humour

- a spirit of adventure

Why patience? Because, no matter how good the online dating service, it may take some time to work your way through online dating profiles, contact people who appeal to you, establish potential relationships with them via email and finally narrow them down to somebody you wish to date. However, most see this as an advantage over conventional dating, in which you know very little at first about the person you date.

Perseverance. You need perseverance for other very reasons described above, though patience and perseverance are not the same thing. Perseverance is a quality that makes you carry on even when things don't work out exactly as you would like. Online dating is fun, but there is nothing worthwhile that does not bring occasional frustrations, and you should be ready for these too.

A sense of humour is something you will need if you are female, for example, and find yourself bombarded with too many emails from prospective male suitors for you to cope with. You will also need a sense of humour to read some of the emails from men who do not seem to realise that they are addressing a real person and not just a listing on a dating site.

But why will you need a spirit of adventure? If you have not tried online dating before, then you must realise that it works rather differently from dating in the offline world, and you will need a spirit of adventure to set forth into this new uncharted realm. But, once you get your bearings it's all pretty straightforward.

So there you have it. Dating online is not something you have to have special equipment for or a particularly developed mental approach to deal with. You can find out more about Internet dating and which I think are the best sites to use by checking out the links below.

A Guide To Internet Dating

By Vicki Churchill

Finding Mr or Ms Right is something we all wish for. The problem is how, when and where to find them.

Over the past few years Internet dating has become very popular with around 80% of people over the age of 40 using Internet dating services to find a partner

Internet dating has one major advantage over meeting someone in a bar. You get to discover all about them before you have even said 'Hi' You can find out their place of birth, their religion likes and dislikes, hobbies and interests and so on.

Internet dating allows you to chat online and get to know someone before meeting him or her. This will obviously increase the chances of finding that special someone.

Quite often you can discover more about a person by correspondence and therefore weed out the people you do not think would be suitable for friendship or a relationship.

Essentially when you meet someone in a bar or social event the physical attraction may well be there but quite often after the first couple of dates you find out you have absolutely nothing in common with them and the relationship stops there.

Before you sign up to an Internet dating agency check around to find out the best ones and more importantly agencies that will be right for you. Think about what you want to get out of the service whether it's just a friendship or something more. Read some reviews about the agency first and how other people have found the service.

Once you have decided one of the most important things to get right is your picture.

This is the downside of Internet dating, the fact that you do not know whether you will be physically attracted to a person until you actually meet them. Making sure your photo is good quality, well lit and a close up shot of your face is essential as many people will be put off if they cannot make out what you look like because the photo is of poor quality and does not show what you look like.

Once you have selected a possible date engage in plenty of discussion with them prior to meeting them. Never disclose too much personal information about yourself or where you live. If a person pressures you to disclose information about yourself that you feel uncomfortable with end the communication right there. Any genuine contact will appreciate why you are being cautious with this information and will not try and manipulate it out of you.

The thing to remember when Internet dating is to have fun as well as make friends and meet potential partners.

Online Dating Service Users Flocking to People Search Web Sites to Avoid Becoming Victims of Fraud

By Tony Cohn

The amount of online dating subscribers utilizing people search web sites to verify the identity of their online dates has increased significantly since 2004.

According to Rick Tufington, Senior Editor of People Search News, the reason for the increase in usage of services from people search sites is an increased awareness of fraud and safety concerns. "While looking for love online, the last thing you want is to end up meeting someone who is married or who has a criminal history. Therefore, you need to check out your date's past and not just take their word for it," Tufington states.

The most common searches purchased by members of online dating services like eHarmony.com, Cupid.com and Match.com include background checks, marriage and divorce searches and criminal history checks.

An increasing concern of the online dating community is whether the "match" that they have found is already married. "Though online dating services make it easy to meet new people, these same services also provide easy and discreet access to extramarital affairs," Tufington states.

Results from the People Search News study showed that the most common people search tool purchased by online dating service subscribers was a background check. "Background checks are great because they typically include a wide range of information that can give you insight into your date's past," Tufington adds. Most background checks include a person's marital and criminal history, age and alias information, lists of possible relatives, and even the names and addresses of neighbors.

People Search News advises online dating service subscribers to investigate a potential date's past before meeting him or her in person. "Most online dating services do not run any sort of people search or background check on their members. Therefore, it is up to you to protect yourself from criminals, adulterers and liars," adds Tufington.

Most people searches, including background checks, marriage and divorce searches and criminal checks can be performed for less than the price of a ticket to a professional sporting event. "The fact that these searches can be done from the comfort of your own home, anonymously and for a reasonable price, makes them a necessity for all online daters," Tufington adds.

Founded in 2006, People Search News is a Sacramento, California based non-commercial online source for people search and people finder related news and information.

Why Online Dating is Becoming so Popular

By Morgan Hamilton

In this day and age, online dating services have become so popular that it is the most widely used form of dating. It was determined in a study conducted by the Online Publishers Association and COM Score Networks that people in the U.S. alone spent over 450 million dollars on online dating and personals services in 2004. This study ranked dating through the Internet as the largest portion of paid content on the World-Wide-Web.

There are more than a thousand different dating sites available as of the beginning of 2006. Match.com, eHarmony, Yahoo Personals, and American Singles are some of the most popular sites.

There was initially a strong social stigma associated with forms of online dating that occurred since the beginning the Internet. Many people thought that those who dated online were strange, socially inept, or otherwise undesirable people that were resorting to an extreme measure to find dates.

However, online dating became more popular in the middle of the 1990s. This change culminated with a movie starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan called ‘You’ve Got Mail’ that was released in 1998. The stigma of dating on the web has all but disappeared in the preset day and age. It is now widely regarded as an intelligent, practical and effective way of meeting people for dates, relationships, and even marriage.

Online dating has more benefits as compared to meeting people by chance or at a bar, night club, or party. For instance, users of an online dating site can browse ‘profiles’ of potential dates prior to communicating with them. This offers an element of selectivity that bars and other traditional meeting places lack.

A person is also limited to the people present in the room in a live social setting. You may also be engaged in a conversation by someone you have no interest in. There is the ever-present fear of rejection in live scenarios. On the other hand, it is much easier to say hello to people you may have otherwise been too nervous to approach on the Internet. You can also choose from thousands of people from any location in the country.

People who criticize online dating often point to a number of dangers of this modern phenomenon. They cite examples where users were mislead, lied to, and sometimes kidnapped or assaulted by people they had met by way of the Internet. However, the dangers of dating on the Internet are common to all forms of dating.

Morgan Hamilton offers expert advice and great tips regarding all aspects concerning Online Dating. Visit our site for more helpful information about Why Online Dating is a Good Idea and other similar topics.

How To Write An Attention Getting Free Online Dating Profile

By Ken Katz

Your free online dating profile is there to sell you to a prospective online dating partner. Think of your online dating profile as your resume for dating. More to the point think of it as an online dating advertisement. Instead of selling a product, you are selling yourself to the online dating site community. So, what better way to learn to write the perfect profile then by learning how advertisement copywriters sell products.

Copywriters learn certain techniques to make a product very appealing to a prospective buyer. Here it is in a nutshell:

Start with a compelling headline about yourself. This will grab the attention of your readers.
Need a compelling sub-heading – This might or might not work with a profile. It depends on the dating site you joined. It will reinforce the headline copy.
Write a knockout first paragraph to make the reader want to read the rest of your sales letter (profile). Include towards the end a paragraph that will tell the reader what they will miss if they don’t contact you!
Sell your “benefits”.

Copywriters always discuss the A.I.D.A. principle. This is:

Grab Attention
Stimulate Interest
Build Up Desire
Urge the reader into Action

Remember, you might not want to accept that you are selling yourself. But, you are. You are selling your “benefits”. Why should someone e-mail your profile over the millions of other profiles on the dating site? So, don’t be shy, sell your benefits! Most copywriters know that if they can’t sell the benefits, they won’t make the sale. The same applies to an online dating profile.

Another principle copywriters learn is to find the products USP or “Unique Selling Position.” All a unique selling position means is you must find out what is different about you that is special over all the other profiles. In a crowded marketplace you want to appear different and unique.

We all have something unique to offer. We just have to discover it. So, the best way I can think of is take a pen and brainstorm for a few minutes. Write down everything you can think of about yourself that you see as a benefit you will add to a relationship. There is lot’s of things you can offer a relationship that is different and better than other profiles. It might be hard at first but I am sure things will come to you.

What is interesting in the marketplace that a lot of products are very similar to each other. The more creative copywriters will be able to discern something all products have and write some convincing copy that makes the common benefit appear unique to their product. This is how to write a “Unique Selling Point”.

Another trick is to think of yourself as the person reading your profile. Ask yourself, “What’s in it for me” or “How can this benefit me” for each thing you have put down on your list. You will come up with your Unique Selling Point.

Let’s touch upon the most important part of your profile. It is your headline. Research shows that 8 out of 10 people scan the headlines in a newspaper or sales letter. When they find headlines that appeal to them they will read at least the first paragraph. If your headline doesn’t interest them then they move on to the next one until they find one that they like. You have just lost a prospective customer.

So, start with your best “benefit” first and put it in your headline. Get your prospect interested from the beginning and pile on lot’s of great copy and “close the sale.”

One last thing you should know about your dating profile. Honesty is the best policy when you write your free online dating profile. If one day you do decide to meet a person who has read your profile, then you will have a lot of explaining to do if you lied. And, probably that one reason ruins the start of what could be a successful relationship.

Now, add a little humor and your good to go.

If you follow these simple steps, your mailbox will be filled with people wanting to chat and possibly meet with you. Good Luck and above all have fun!
